Introducing the Bible Society's work in SE Asia

In recent days, just about every lifestyle and travel show ontelevision has been spruiking South East Asia as the perfect touristdestination. We are lured with pictures of perfect beaches, fabulousshopping and breathtaking scenery. The region certainly exhibits someof the most beautiful scenery in the world, with its rugged mountains,vast flood plains and tropical rainforests.

But it is also subject to some of the most devastating naturaldisasters.Thousands of people die as a result of cyclones, floods,landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis. It is to this region -specifically the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Bangladesh -that the Bible Society has turned for its special project for 2009.

And the reason for that choice is simple. Despite their many differences, these four nations share the same need for God's Word. Most of the 252 million people living across these four countries (in a combined area that is smaller than South Australia) have not yet been impacted by the Good News of Jesus Christ.

There is an urgent need for the truth, the whole truth, about God's Son - Jesus Christ - to be taught. There is a desperate need for the Bible.

However most of the people living here are extremely poor and, for them, the Bible is a luxury item. For others living in remote areas, the Bible is not yet available in their language. The churches of SE Asia need our help. The task is too great for them to tackle alone.

But you can partner with us to make an impact in these four nations. The Bible Society in Australia is aiming to raise $140,000 in 1009 to help spread God's Word by assisting with:

  •  Cambodia's revision of the old Khmer Bible
  • Bangladesh's literacy packs using the Scriptures
  • Laos' Scriptures for young people and minority language groups
  • Vietnam's revision of the New Testament for minority language groups
