Elephant in the Pew
Bible has Sex Appeal?
Steve Davies and Hannah Perreira were caught at Sexpo in February this year. This is not a scandal, repeat, not a scandal.
They joined forces with USA-based Christian organisation, XXXchurch , a ministry helping people recover from the dangerous affects and addictions of the porn industry. The obvious question is: Why was the Bible Society there?
The same reason we always turn up – to share the transforming good news of the Bible. Where men (and women) continue to search for God in difficult places, we're there giving them the best tool to find him – the Bible, and as the old quote by GK Chesterton goes, 'Every man who knocks on the door of a brothel is looking for God'.
"I've had a passion for sharing Jesus with people for many years now," Steve reflects. "At Sexpo, I had some of the most meaningful 'God' conversations I've had in 23 years. The conversations would generally open with, 'I thought God hated sex - why are you here?'
"It's a great opportunity to set the record straight on the kind of God that we encounter in the Bible – one who loves us, loves relationships, who created sex for both pleasure and purpose."
BSQ gave away over 3000 "Jesus Loves Porn Star" Bibles, had countless meaningful conversations and were invited into the doors of many homes through positive media coverage in the Courier Mail and conversations with TV news and radio stations.
Please pray that the Bible will continue impacting on those seeking God.
Bible Society will be making resources available to Queensland churches, looking at how to confront the Elephant in the Pew with love and understanding as we strive to deal with the issue of pornography. Stay tuned for more information on this campaign throughout 2009.
